Hello,For our LCDs you are directly connected to the LEDs, the power is not controlled by the ST7789s.I would recommend using an external current limiting circuit into the anode for the display.

What is the part number of the display you are using.It would help to look at the driver to see if there are any pins that let you change the scan direction (up/down & left/right)

It is not possible to test the display without using a microcontroller.You would need to initialize the display then change all off the pixels to black using the controller.
