When is the heater required on NHD-C12864A1Z-FSB-FBW-HTT

I have a low power application required to operate in -40C operating temperature.
NHD-C12864A1Z-FSB-FBW-HTT display is rated for -40C but is that with the heater running or without the heater running?
When is the heater needed?

  Hi Gary,
  
  This display is rated to -40°C with the heater running.  With the heater off, it is rated to -30°C.
  As the temperature cools down to -30°C, the contrast of the display will begin getting lighter.  Therefore, it is best to start heating before it gets down to -30°C to maintain the contrast level as the display gets closer to -40°C.
