NHD-0420DZW-AY5 - Proprietary controller, need compatible datasheet reference

Hello,
We are trying to get this display up and running with a 6800-MPU 8 bit interface. We are having trouble and need a reference for how the interface really works. The display datasheet is limited in information.

I read that the NHD-0420-DZ series LCDs have a compatible interface. Is this a truly backward compatible? Meaning the same software will interface with both?

If so, does that mean I can reference the ST7066U Controller/Driver datasheet to understand better how the display interface operates?

If not, what can I reference beyond the display datasheet?

  The controller on this display is compatible with the ST7066U. The commands and writes can take up to 600µs, so you would have to either check the busy flag or use delays between commands.
