Question about I2C for TFT displays with capacitive touch panels

Hi guys,

We are using for a project the NHD-10.1-1024600AF-LSXV#-CTP, and I will appreciate your answer to these questions:

1) I can see in the pinout, that there are I2C signals in the 40 pin FPC cable as well as in the 6 pin FPC cable. Are these different I2C interfaces? Or is the same I2C for the capacitive touch controller that is available in both cables?

2) Is there a reason for the 6 pin cable being so short? If I extend it, in order to make it about 30cm long, is it going to work?

3) This display is going to be part of an instrument, which has circuits very susceptible to noise. In this case, does the extension needs to be shielded?

4) Can the extension be made of twisted pair cable? I'm planning in doing a small PCB that converts 6 pin FPC to RJ45 connector or similar. The idea is take advantage of the twisted pair flexibility.

    Hi Patricio,

    The I2C pins 6 and 7 on the 40 pin FPC cable are for reading the Extended Display Identification Data or (EDID) that is programmed into our display and is separate from the I2C for the capacitive touchscreen.
    The EDID data contained in the display allows a microcontroller to read and identify the display's parameters including it's resolution, timing requirements, and color characteristics.

    The 6 pin CTP cable can be made longer, or it can be extended using our NHD-CTP6 interface board https://newhavendisplay.com/breakout-board-for-capacitive-touchscreens-6-pin-ffc/

    AN I2C cable at 30cm long should work ok depending again on the environment.
    Using pull up resistors and twisted pair cable to extend the length is a good option to help reduce noise.   As always, experiment with a prototype to confirm proper operation with your design.
