Controller type for NHD-0216KZW-AY5

We are trying to get this display up and running over spi (serial) interface. We are having trouble and need a reference for how the interface really works. The display datasheet is limited in information.

I read that datasheet where is pointed out that controller is compatible with LCDs? why not OLED ? should I look through all of them to guess how it works? what is first byte for write command and data?
